Healthy Bones Action Week runs from 7th – 13th August 2017 and it was developed to encourage people of all ages to protect their bones and raise awareness of osteoporosis since its inception in 1994.
Osteoporosis is one of the least-discussed, under-diagnosed and under-treated diseases in Australia, yet poor bone health affects 2 in 3 Australians over 50 years, including a growing number of men.
For this year’s Healthy Bones Action Week, Qscan would like to contribute to this important week by highlighting the importance of a Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) scan which is a scan that uses low energy x-rays to measure the density of your bone.
A Bone Mineral Densitometry scan is used to diagnose osteoporosis and assess your fracture risk as it monitors your bone density which is especially useful if you are on treatment for osteoporosis. During a Bone Densitometry scan, the usual regions that are scanned are the lower spine and hips and the scan only takes approximately 5 minutes.
