The Leukaemia Foundation first hosted the World’s Greatest Shave back in 1998. For the past 20 years, it has remained one of Australia’s largest funding events. The event aims to raise money for emotional and practical support for families facing blood cancer.
Blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, is the third most common cause of cancer deaths in Australia and can develop in persons of all ages, at any time. More than 60,000 Australians are living with blood cancer, with on average one person every 41 minutes being diagnosed.
The Leukaemia Foundation supports patients and families by providing information, support and counselling services, education, transport to and from hospital and accommodation for families forced to relocate during care. The foundation also invests millions of dollars a year into research to aid treatments and discovery a cure.
This year, the World’s Greatest Shave takes place between 14th and the 18th March. The World’s Greatest Shaves gives the opportunity for people of all ages to come together, obtain as much sponsorship as possible and to shave their hair. Lots of men opt to shave their beards, side burns or moustaches too! If you’re unsure on shaving, get creative with the face paint or try going for a temporary hair colour change!
