Frequently Asked Questions
A PET-CT scan combines two imaging techniques in one appointment: a PET (positron emission tomography) scan, which uses a small amount of radioactive tracer to detect cell activity in the body, and a CT (computed tomography) scan, which shows the structure of your body. Combining the two can help doctors detect changes earlier than with structural imaging alone and supports diagnosis and treatment planning.
Qscan Hobart (PET-CT) performs FDG PET-CT, the most common type, used in oncology to help detect cancer, assess how far it has spread and monitor treatment response, as well as to investigate infection, inflammation, and some brain conditions. We also perform PSMA PET-CT, a specialised scan used to help detect prostate cancer, including whether it has spread beyond the prostate.
Yes. A current referral from your GP or specialist is required.
A PET-CT appointment usually takes around 2 to 3 hours in total, depending on the type of scan you have been referred for. Our team will let you know how long your appointment is scheduled for at the time of booking.
When you book, let our team know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney failure or diabetes, have had a previous reaction to CT contrast, are severely claustrophobic, or take regular medication. Our friendly customer service team will advise you of all required preparation at the time of your booking.
Qscan Hobart (PET-CT) is a dedicated PET-CT clinic. Qscan North Hobart, a short distance away, offers x-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI, so you can access a wider range of Qscan services across our two Hobart clinics.
Why Choose Qscan Hobart (PET-CT)
Qscan Hobart (PET-CT) is a dedicated PET-CT facility in the heart of Hobart. PET-CT shows how cells are functioning in the body, which can reveal changes before they appear on other scans. Scans are tailored to the condition being investigated. While most common in cancer care, PET-CT also helps assess brain function, identify infection, and support treatment decisions in complex conditions, and in some cases, heart conditions. On-site parking is available, and our team will confirm any costs before your scan, with bulk billing available for Medicare-eligible referrals from a specialist. Qscan Hobart (PET-CT) works alongside Qscan North Hobart, giving you access to x-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI across both Hobart clinics.
