What is Interventional Radiology?
Interventional radiology (abbreviated to IR or VIR for Vascular and Interventional Radiology) is a medical subspecialty of radiology that uses minimally invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system including, but not limited to vascular, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, genitourinary, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and the central nervous system.
Interventional radiology is used to diagnose and treat patients using the least invasive techniques available to minimise risk, improve health outcomes and overall recovery time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, a valid referral from your GP or specialist is required for all interventional radiology procedures at Qscan. This helps ensure the right imaging and treatment is provided for your condition.
Interventional radiology involves minimally invasive procedures that are guided by medical imaging. These treatments can help with pain management, biopsies, and joint injections. Common procedures include:
- Image-guided joint injections
- Biopsies for diagnostic purposes
- Pain-relieving treatments like radiofrequency ablation
- Osteoarthritis treatment using EUFLEXXA® joint injections
At Qscan, these procedures are carried out by experienced radiologists using advanced imaging equipment for accuracy and comfort.
EUFLEXXA® is an injectable treatment primarily used for managing pain caused by osteoarthritis in joints such as the knees, hips, and shoulders. It can help lubricate the joint, reducing discomfort and improving mobility.
Radiofrequency ablation is a targeted pain relief treatment. It uses controlled heat to destroy nerve tissue, and minimise neck, back and joint pain. This technique is suitable for patients who have previously had short-lived or little response to steroid injections.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections use a concentrated portion of your own blood to promote healing and increase anti-inflammatory processes. PRP is commonly used to assist in osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, muscle or tendon tears, plantar fasciitis and non-healing fractures. At Qscan, PRP injections are image-guided to ensure accurate placement for effective results.
Joint injections deliver medication directly into the joint to reduce pain and inflammation, often caused by arthritis or injury. These image-guided injections are commonly used for the knee, elbow, hip and shoulder joints. Depending on your condition, your doctor may recommend a cortisone injection or a local anaesthetic as part of your treatment.
A nerve root block is a type of injection aimed to relieve pain and other radicular symptoms caused by an irritated or compressed nerve. Guided by imaging, this procedure delivers local anaesthetic medication adjacent to the nerve to relieve pain and other radicular symptoms caused by an irritated or compressed nerve.
Your referring doctor and the Qscan team will provide specific instructions before your appointment. These may include:
- Fasting prior to the procedure (if required)
- Wear loose clothing
- You may also be asked to remove objects like watches or jewellery for your scan
- Arranging transport if you have been advised not to drive afterwards
We recommend arranging alternative childcare for the day of your procedure or bringing another adult with you to care for your child. Children are not allowed in the examination room, and there is no supervision available in the waiting area.
