Managing your health has always required juggling paperwork, referrals, test results, scan reports passed between specialists, filed away in folders, or lost in transit. That's changing. From 1 July 2026, Qscan Radiology Clinics is uploading your scan reports directly to your My Health Record, as part of a nationwide initiative to give Australians faster, safer, and more connected healthcare.
Here's everything you need to know.
What Is My Health Record?
My Health Record is a secure, Australian Government-backed online summary of your health information. Think of it as a single, centralised health file that's accessible to you and your treating healthcare team, whenever and wherever they need it.
Your record can hold a wide range of health information, including:
- Medical conditions and allergies
- Current and past medications
- Immunisation history
- Hospital discharge summaries
- Pathology results (blood tests, urine tests)
- From 1 July 2026: diagnostic imaging reports from Qscan
Managed through your myGov account and supported by the Australian Digital Health Agency (https://www.digitalhealth.gov.au), My Health Record is underpinned by strict federal privacy legislation. You remain in control of who can access your information at all times.
What's Changing From 1 July 2026?
New legislation — the Health Legislation Amendment (Modernising My Health Record – Sharing by Default) Act 2025 — now requires diagnostic imaging providers across Australia to upload written radiology reports to My Health Record by default.
As a participating provider, Qscan will begin uploading written imaging reports from 1 July 2026. If you already have a registered My Health Record, no action is required, your reports will be shared automatically.
This change applies to reports across all of Qscan's imaging services, including:
- X-rays
- Ultrasounds
- CT scans
- MRI
- PET scans
- Mammography
- Nuclear medicine studies
Important: Only written reports will be uploaded. Your actual scan images will not be included and will continue to be accessible through the Qscan Patient Results portal and app (https://www.qscan.com.au/patient-access).
When Can You View Your Report?
How quickly you can view your report in My Health Record depends on the type of imaging:
Imaging Type | When You Can View
| X-ray (limbs, arms and legs) | Immediately after upload |
| All other imaging (CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound, mammography, etc.) | After a 5-day delay |
The 5-day delay for most imaging exists to give your referring GP or specialist time to review your results and contact you if any follow-up is needed before you see the report. Your healthcare provider will always have access to the full report as soon as it is uploaded.
Why Does This Matter for Your Care?
Historically, imaging reports have been sent directly to the referring doctor and stored with that individual practice. If you see a new GP, visit an emergency department, or consult a specialist who hasn't previously treated you, they may not have access to your imaging history, which can mean delays, repeated scans, and gaps in your care.
With your Qscan reports now in My Health Record, any treating healthcare provider you authorise — including GPs, specialists, and hospital clinicians — can access your radiology history instantly. This supports:
- Safer, more informed clinical decisions
- Reduced risk of duplicate imaging
- More seamless referrals between providers
- Better continuity of care, especially for people managing chronic or complex conditions
How Is Your Privacy Protected?
Your privacy remains front and centre. My Health Record is protected by the My Health Records Act 2012 and associated legislation, with robust controls in place:
- You decide who sees your information. You can restrict access to specific providers, documents, or organisations at any time.
- You can see who has accessed your record. A full audit trail is available to you.
- Unauthorised access carries serious penalties under federal law.
- You can opt out. If you do not want your Qscan imaging reports uploaded to My Health Record, simply let our reception staff know at the time of your visit. You can also manage your preferences directly through your myGov account.
- You can delete or restrict a report after the fact. If you change your mind, you can hide, delete, or restrict a specific report using the privacy controls in My Health Record.
Who Is Eligible for My Health Record?
To register for a My Health Record, you must:
- Be 14 years of age or older
- Have the capacity to make decisions for yourself
- Hold an Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI), which you'll already have if you're enrolled in Medicare or listed on a Medicare or DVA card
Children under 14 are managed by a parent or legal guardian as an Authorised Representative. Young people aged 14–17 may choose to manage their own record, and at 18, all previous representatives are automatically removed.
If you don't yet have a My Health Record, you can register at any time at digitalhealth.gov.au (https://www.digitalhealth.gov.au).
What Do You Need to Do?
For most patients, the answer is simply: nothing. If you already have a registered My Health Record, your Qscan reports will begin uploading automatically from 1 July 2026.
If you'd prefer your reports aren't uploaded, let our reception team know when you arrive at your appointment. No judgment, no fuss, your preferences will be noted and respected.
If you don't yet have a My Health Record and would like one, visit (https://www.digitalhealth.gov.au) to register through myGov.
