What is a carotid ultrasound?
A carotid ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of the carotid arteries in your neck. It can detect atherosclerosis (plaque build-up) or other changes in the artery walls that may affect blood flow to the brain. The procedure is painless, quick, and does not use radiation.
Frequently Asked Questions
You lie comfortably on a bed with your head slightly tilted. A sonographer applies warm gel to your neck. A handheld probe is moved gently over your carotid arteries.
The ultrasound machine creates real-time images and measures blood flow. The scan usually takes 15–30 minutes, is completely painless, and allows you to resume normal activities immediately.
No special preparation is required for a carotid ultrasound. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid jewellery or scarves around the neck.
After your examination, your report and images will be sent electronically to your referring practitioner. They will also be available electronically via the Qscan Patient Results app and web portal 7-10 days after your examination.
